Home Cooks In LA County Can Now Operate As Private Mini Restaurants

Updated: Nov 30

The Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) Program allows food businesses to legally operate out of private home kitchens. MEHKO Program allows home cooks to prepare food and drink, and operate as a private mini restaurant authorized to serve up to 30 meals per day, capped at 90 meals per week, and earn up to $100,000 in gross annual sales.

LA County Department of Public Health officials stated: “This program serves as a gateway for micro-entrepreneurs to enter the formal economy, with particular benefits for underrepresented groups such as

  • women,

  • immigrants, and

  • people of color

— communities that often face barriers to launching their own businesses. MEHKO empowers these individuals to transform their culinary passions into sustainable livelihoods with minimal start-up costs.”

This is a good thing...

MEHKO permitting has been in effect since 2019 in neighboring Riverside County. As of November 1, MEHKO permitting is effective in LA County as well.

LA County began accepting applications in early October.
