Compton Chamber of Commerce Statement on Wildfire Recovery Efforts

Nearly three months have passed since the devastating Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire wreaked havoc across Southern California, leaving destruction and displacement in their wake. Yet, despite the overwhelming need for swift action, the recovery efforts remain pathetically slow.
The Compton Chamber of Commerce urges city and state leaders not to normalize, downplay, or forget the problems stemming from the Pacific Palisades and Altadena wildfires.
According to the Mayor of Los Angeles, the rebuilding effort is expected to take well over five years. However, as of today, only four rebuilding permits have been issued—an alarmingly inadequate response considering nearly 20,000 structures were destroyed. The lack of urgency in this process is unacceptable and fails to meet the needs of the thousands of families and businesses awaiting answers and assistance.
Beyond the sluggish response, there remains significant confusion and bewilderment over how these wildfires were handled and the aftermath they have left behind. The public deserves transparency. Nearly three months later, there are still no concrete answers about what happened, how these disasters can be prevented in the future, and, most critically, how we can accelerate the recovery process.
The leadership of the City of Los Angeles must be held accountable for its failure to address these issues with the urgency and efficiency that the affected communities deserve.
We stand with those impacted by these fires and will continue to advocate for swift and effective recovery measures. The time for action is now. Shame on city leadership for allowing this crisis to languish unresolved.
We demand immediate action, clearer communication, and a comprehensive plan to expedite rebuilding efforts and ensure that such a catastrophe is never mishandled again.
